Pitchers More Prone to Baseball Injuries

Baseball may be a funny game, as former Major Leaguer Joe Garagiola once wrote, but it’s also fraught with the risk of injury, especially for pitchers, a new study finds.

Researchers who studied data for the 2002-2008 seasons say pitchers suffered significantly higher injury rates for upper and lower extremity injuries than fielders.

According to the study, presented at the annual meeting of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine in Providence, R.I., pitchers spent a greater proportion of days on the disability list, 62.4%, compared to 37.6% for fielders.

The study also says that fielders as well as pitchers spent significantly more days on the disabled list for upper extremity injuries than for the lower extremities.

It’s especially hazardous for pitchers before the annual mid-season All-Star game. Dur

4 Things Currently Rocking My World

Written on July 21, 2024 - 3:08 pm | by Terra

The “rocking my world” entry has become somewhat of a theme here on my blog. It’s where I get to talk about random things that may not constitute a full blog post by themselves, but with their powers combined (like Captain Planet) make for a fun article.

Written on July 18, 2024 - 10:35 pm | by EmmyW

Sorry to all Project Swole readers who are waiting to have their comments or emails answered. Sorry also for not posting in about a week. I am swamped, but have about 10 posts in the works.

Soon I will be starting a forum to deal with all these questions so that Swole Readers can also help each other. I will be looking for moderators to help moderate the forum and answer questions. Do I have any volunteers?

More soon…

Managing Sore Muscles and Aches and Pains

You work hard all week, so when the weekend finally rolls around you want to play just as hard. There’s nothing like a few rounds of golf, a hike in the mountains, or an intense workout at the gym to reinvigorate you.

Weekend warriors be warned, though — Saturday and Sunday activities can lead to Monday soreness.

What’s Causing My Sore Muscles?

It’s normal to have sore muscles after you work out, play sports, or even do housework, especially if:

  • You did an activity you’re not used to (like running a marathon when you normally jog just a few miles).
  • You suddenly kicked up your exercise intensity level or increased the length of your workout.
  • You did eccentric exercises, in which you lengthened instead of shortened your muscle (like walking downhill or extending your arm during a bicep curl).

These changes to your exercise routine can lead to tiny injuries called microdamage in the muscle fibers and connective tissue.
